“Ideal Fitness”: Health Clubs Sell “Convenience And Social Scene”, Not Necessarily Fitness

OGGIES THAT INSIST ON GOING TO GYMS IN ORDER TO USE “CARDIO MACHINES” WILL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE RESULTS…YOU NEED TO “RUN”, OUTSIDE AND UP HILLS…THERE IS NO EASY WAY…AND THE HEALTH CLUBS WILL SELL THE BENEFITS OF CONVENIENCE…NO PAIN NO GAIN….

“People are saying, ‘I can’t do my cardio as well because I miss cable,’” Spinicelli said, repeating the familiar refrain of uninspired, entertainment-starved exercisers. “TV is a distraction for them. It helps them put in the time.”

East Shore YMCA personal trainer August Spinicelli surveys the busy fitness center and senses fading determination among the people trotting on treadmills, spinning on stationary bikes and chugging away on elliptical machines.

No, it’s not the midwinter blahs or the implosion of New Year’s resolutions that’s sabotaging the sweating, huffing people working out at the Y.

The culprit is the routine-killing absence of popular cable TV channels such as ESPN, CNN, Fox News, CNBC and the History Channel since Comcast discontinued analog broadcasts in Harrisburg this year.
