hugh-jackman-wolverine1To look the part, 6ft 2in Hugh woke every morning at 4am to eat one of six high protein meals a day before starting a high intensity weight training programme which included bench pressing 315lb and leg pressing 1000lb.

It was so tough he put on 15lb of muscle.

“When you lose fat you lose muscle at the same time. The trick is in maintaining as much muscle as you can.

“So it’s about eating as much but trying to be as lean as possible about it. So I was eating a lot of chicken and fish, and steak and steamed vegetables to the point where I was never hungry.

HE HAS been voted the sexiest man alive and his latest big screen role will definitely have Hugh Jackman’s fans wolf-whistling.

The actor has buffd up even more to play the lead role in prequel movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

And that meant Hugh had to get in even better shape than normal. He said: “I wanted him to look animalistic.

“There’s one image from the comic book, where he’s running away, claws out and hunched over.

“He’s escaping and he just looks so animalistic, which is, of course, what the story’s about, that battle within him.

“So to do that I had to be muscular.

“But I didn’t want to look like an Abercrombie and Fitch model. I wanted to be uncomfortable, very powerful and dangerous.”

He said: “You hear adverts saying, ‘Build muscle, lose fat’. It’s cr*p. That’s impossible. The body doesn’t work that way.

“It took me up to an hour to eat a meal because I felt like I couldn’t digest it.
“I want to say I was almost depressed at times it so weighs down on you.

“I mean it is steamed chicken. There is no salt, no nothing, and yet your energy is through the roof. It’s amazing. It’s kind of like a real high.”

Married to actress Deborra Lee-Furness and dad to two adopted children, Oscar, eight, and Ava, three, the Sydney-born star admits his wide loved his honed muscles but wasn’t so keen on the steps he had to take to achieve them.

He said: “She digs it. But there’s a downside to being married to someone on a high-protein diet. I’ll let you work that one out.”

The workouts can only reinforce his Sexiest Man Alive tag, which was given to him by readers of People magazine. Again he’s laid back about the title.

He laughed: “The sexy thing, I’ve known that for a long time. It’s more of a relief than anything.”
