“The practical significance of the study is that eating an easy-to-incorporate amount of walnuts and fatty fish can cause meaningful decreases in blood cholesterol and triglycerides even in healthy individuals,” Sujatha Rajaram, associate professor at Loma Linda, and one of the authors of the report, said in a statement.

A new study released on Monday touts the benefits of a combined diet of walnuts and fatty fish.

Researchers at Loma Linda University in California announced that a study had found that that in healthy people, eating walnuts lowered cholesterol more than fish, while fatty fish lowered triglycerides.

Rajaram and his colleagues said that eating about a handful of whole nuts a day lowered serum cholesterol by more than 5 percent and LDL, or “bad”, cholesterol by almost 10 percent compared to a controlled diet based on recommendations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The researchers said that eating two servings a week of fatty fish, such as salmon, decreased triglyceride levels by more than 11 percent and increased “good” cholesterol by about 4 percent.

This diet also slightly reduced LDL cholesterol levels, according to the researchers.
