Ideal Shape: Study Reveals Importance Of Exercise Along With Diet For Optimal Health

In a University of Missouri study, participants who normally took 6,000 to 10,000 steps per day were asked to cut back to just 1,400, to use vehicles and elevators instead of walking or climbing stairs, and essentially to avoid as much activity as possible. Within just 14 days, their blood tests revealed heightened levels of blood fats and sugars, a warning sign of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, along with an increase in abdominal fat — the kind that can put you in the hospital — and a decrease in bone and muscle mass.

One of the main reasons, researchers learned a few months ago, is that not only is exercise beneficial to one’s health, but a total lack of exercise can actually make one vulnerable to chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart trouble.

The researchers’ conclusion: insufficient physical activity can literally make you sick, and seriously ill, and is in fact not just unhealthy but downright dangerous.

As a statistical testament either to the limitations of physical exertion when it comes to weight loss, or perhaps just to the sheer pervasiveness and power of our national weight-gain trends, consider: In 1988, the average offensive lineman grinding it out in the NFL trenches stood about six foot four and a half and weighed 289 pounds.

Today, that average OL workhorse’s height has slipped to six foot four, even as his weight has risen by nearly 10 percent, to a groundshaking 308.

If the Great Obesity Epidemic has engulfed even these guys, who typically sweat off the approximate weight of a fox terrier during a game, it is clear that exercise alone is hopelessly inadequate for weight reduction.

But it’s good for almost everything else, health-wise, and if you methodically limit your caloric intake in order to slim down, you’ll definitely lose more weight and lose it sooner if you work out regularly as well.
